Well, we’ve been crying wolf for about two years now. This is finally it.
MTV Home Entertainment plans to release the long-awaited State DVD set on July 14th….Bastille Day! Because as you know, The State would not exist if not for its deeply influenced origins in French history.
MTV now has a State DVD Website:
The plan is to coordinate the release between the Reno finale and the premiere of Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter’s very funny new show, Michael and Michael Have Issues.
Tell your friends. Storm the castle.

Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me twice, shame on me
Fool me 47 times, and I will stop distributing tacos to your house.
On a side note…
Will the skits done that one spring break o so long ago make it on the DVD?
I’m specifically curious about the one where everyone was reciting Shakespeare in tights…with oddly shaped bulges showing through.

Can’t remember about Hard-On Shakespeare- should be on there though.

Can’t wait. Wow. I’ve been trying to show my kids (who are 5, 10 & 17) bitmapped YouTube clips and old VHS tapes of the State! We need the real thing - the DVDs!! It’s soooo long overdue!
Awwwwww yeaaaaah.

Can’t wait! My bf and I bonded over our mutual love of The State when we first met over 4 years ago! We were both surprised someone else remembered it. I’m Doug and I will not be caged like some manimal! hahaha

I’ll believe it when I see it … Have you seen the DVD yourself? and if so do you know how much of the original music was preserved? there are a handful of sketches where the timing of the music was kind of essential.. so just wondering.. if not i’m happy either way..

Hey Joe,
this all sounds awesome, I hate to geek out about it but can I ask a few questions about the dvd?
1. will the CBS show appear on the set?
2. will all the unreleased sketches that are listed on the official state website appear on this set?
3. does each dvd set come with a copy of your long out of print state book and your never released state comedy cd?
4. do you state folks have any plans for the new material you wrote and performed at that comedy fest in LA?
sorry, I said I hated to geek out, but by hated to, I meant loved to, the state was my favorite sketch comedy troupe in the world, so any info would be appreciated.
be well

1) Unfortunately no. The State has ownership rights which we would have to give up if the CBS special is on MTV Home Entertainment. Maybe in the future, the group will get a distributor to share revenue on a CBS Special DVD.
2) Haven’t compared lists but there’s A LOT of unaired sketches in the box set.
3) No and No, but you probably knew that. Re: album- We talked about doing the album sketches as animated shorts and releasing as a DVD, but Warner Bros. owns the material.
4) There’s talk of a short tour in the fall, but nothing’s for sure.

Omigod omigod omigod omigod! I’m not ashamed of it: I just pooped myself a little. It’s a poop that I’ve held for years and years. It is dry and clean. It smells like release… and poop. Poop with heavy accents of relief. This meconium is my intestinal joy that the State will be born-again. As I offer this gift of welcome, so too, should the world welcome the gift that is the State on DVD.

thanks for the answers Joe, much appreciated.
I want you to know that when I become extremely rich I’m going to flat out buy the rights to the CBS special and the Warner Bros. masters and give them right back to you guys, on the condition that you release them promptly on dvd and cd respectively.
so, look out that. I’m sure the money will roll in right after this recession.
keep on being awesome.

Dear sweet Jebus it’s finally going to happen. Joe I can’t tell you how happy I am to see you on Reno. I just now found out about the previous State get together of all cast members. How awesome!
You guys have truly shaped comedy in so many ways and also helped shape the obscure comedy nature within so many of us.
I’m making everyone I know buy copies of the set when it’s released. The world will finally understand, and maybe those crooks at MTV, what they had.
I’m pumped! This news made my day freaking awesome man!
Meet you at the Porcupine Racetrack brotha!

Joe,
Do you know if there are any sketches that will have the original music? Or did all the copyrighted songs need to be cut out? It’s a bit disappointing but I’m glad the DVD is at least coming out!

unfortunately, no- too much $$$. all the 90’s pop songs had to go. But we had our dear, dear friend Craig Wedren (who did the State theme & is an awesome rock-n-roller) compose new music that gets across the original vibe really well.
